Open-Source Ecommerce Plugin
WooCommerce
Independent company profile and user reviews
WooCommerce is an open-source ecommerce platform built for WordPress. Its core software is free and gives store owners extensive control over products, checkout, payments, customer data and site customization. Operating costs depend on hosting, payment processing, themes, extensions, maintenance and any development support required by the store.
About WooCommerce
WooCommerce is an open-source ecommerce platform that turns a WordPress website into an online store. The core plugin provides product management, cart and checkout functionality, order administration, customer accounts, shipping settings, tax options and support for multiple payment methods.
The core software has no monthly subscription, but a functioning store still requires WordPress hosting, a domain, security, backups and ongoing maintenance. Depending on the business model, additional costs may include premium themes, payment processing, subscriptions, bookings, advanced shipping tools, marketing extensions and professional development.
WooCommerce’s main advantage is control. Store owners can choose their hosting provider, modify the site’s code, retain ownership of their content and customer data, and add functionality through a large extension ecosystem. The trade-off is technical responsibility: performance, compatibility, updates, security and troubleshooting may be divided between the hosting provider, theme developer, extension vendors and the store owner.

Security plugin stack became its own part time job
Love the control, genuinely do. But staying on top of security plugins, updates, and occasional vulnerability patches across a growing plugin list turned into more ongoing work than I initially budgeted time for.
Multi-currency setup took real configuration but works well now
Expanding into international sales required stitching together a currency plugin with my existing payment gateway. Took a frustrating weekend to get right, functions smoothly now that it’s configured properly.
Migrated an existing site over and kept all my SEO rankings
Biggest worry before switching was losing search rankings built up over years. Careful redirect planning during migration meant traffic barely dipped, which wouldn’t have been guaranteed on a hosted platform switch.
Good fit if WordPress already feels like home
Already comfortable in WordPress so this was a natural extension. HPOS genuinely improved checkout speed once order volume picked up for me. Support is scattered across hosting, theme and plugin vendors though, took real digging once to find who actually owned a specific bug.
Free plugin, expensive business
The free core plugin is misleading once hosting, premium extensions and the dev time to keep everything compatible after updates all get added up. Spent more fixing plugin conflicts most months than actually running the store.
Exactly the control a custom build needed
Full control over hosting and checkout was the whole reason I picked this over a hosted platform. Took real time to learn the stack properly. Three years in, I haven’t hit a wall yet that an extension or a few hours of dev time couldn’t fix.
