About Shopify

Shopify is a hosted commerce platform that provides the technical foundation for building and managing an independent online store. The service includes hosting, storefront tools, checkout, product and inventory management, order administration, reporting and integrations with multiple sales channels.
The Basic plan currently starts at $29 per month when billed annually. Higher plans provide additional staff access, reporting, international selling features and lower payment rates. Depending on the merchant’s location and payment setup, total costs may also include credit-card processing, third-party transaction fees, paid themes, applications, domains and specialist services.
Shopify’s main advantage is flexibility. Merchants can customize the storefront, connect a large range of applications and expand from online sales into retail, international commerce and additional channels. The trade-off is that Shopify provides infrastructure rather than a finished business: sellers still need products, content, traffic, operating processes and an appropriate combination of applications.

Editorial note

EcomReality reviewed Shopify’s public pricing, plan documentation and core commerce features. Does the job, no more no less

August 24, 2026

Nothing dramatic to report either way. Checkout works, POS integration with my physical shop was smoother than I expected, reporting is functional if a bit basic on the entry plan. Three stars because it’s reliable but genuinely unremarkable compared to what I expected given how much everyone talks about this platform.

Reliable but Can Get Expensive

August 22, 2026

Shopify is easy to use and has plenty of tools for building and managing an online store. The app selection is great, but the monthly cost can add up once you start adding paid apps. Overall, it’s a reliable platform with a lot of flexibility.

Overwhelming if you don’t already know what you’re doing

August 20, 2026

Signed up as a complete beginner and spent more time researching which apps I supposedly needed than actually building my store. The platform gives you an empty foundation and assumes you already know how to build a house on it. Support was fine when I asked specific questions, but I didn’t know enough to ask the right ones for the first month.

Solid foundation but the app costs snuck up on me

August 20, 2026

Been running my store for about a year and a half. The core platform itself is reliable, checkout works, inventory syncs fine across my one online and one physical location. What knocked a star off is that my actual monthly cost is nearly triple the $29 headline once you count the apps I needed for email, reviews, and basic upsells. Not Shopify’s fault exactly, just wish that was clearer going in.
